Instant chicharon

Microwavable. Chicharon. Yes. Thanks to Filipino ingenuity from down south (Davao!), we now have such a thing as microwavable chicharon. I stumbled upon this at the CITEM Trade Fair that was held at Megamall last week.

Yes. Breathe.
At P260 a box, you get four bags worth of chicharon. The instructions are pretty clear and simple: each box comes with four packs of seemingly inconspicuous pork bits, along with four paper bags. What you do is you lay down the pork bits evenly in a paper bag, pop it in the microwave on high for 2-6 minutes (depending on your microwave’s settings) and wait for the magic to unfold.

Unfortunately I have been restricted from opening this box. We’re giving it away to balikbayans who do not have the luxury of having Lapid’s in their neighborhood. But after eagerly and patiently waiting for the promo girl to whip up a batch at their booth, I can attest that this actually works. After a few minutes you would be greeted by a huge, puffed up bag of chicharon (just the skin, no taba) which contains about two popcorn bags worth of porcine goodness.
